The Pulse: Smart Moves for Industry

Issue #003: Winter 2009

We all know that GREEN is the way to go in today's market - well going green can save you green! Here are a few energy saving suggestions that will help your bottom line!

Energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs use up to 75% less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs. The initial cost for the product may be slightly higher but the longer lifetime and the savings in electricity will far outweigh the original cost. TIP: Call your local power company for a site survey. They can often find extra opportunities to save.

Poorly insulated windows or (gasp!) an open window can result in serious loss of energy - hence money! Make sure that windows are tightly sealed and that any open windows are securely closed.

Taking control of your heating can make a huge difference to your bills. Your company can save around 10 per cent of its energy simply by turning down the thermostat by one degree. TIP: Don’t heat areas that aren’t in constant use, such as corridors and store rooms, and make sure radiators aren’t blocked by furniture.

Believe it or not, waterless urinals are becoming a more common "fixture" around the country and the world. Fresh water is a decreasing resource everywhere. Compared with a normal model, a waterless urinal can save one to three gallons of water per flush. GROSS, you say? How about the germs on a traditional handle, the spray from water flushing and the constantly wet interior of a standard urinal - all breeding grounds for germs! The waterless urinal uses a biodegradable liquid sealant (oil or alcohol) on top of a conventional water-filled drain. The barrier layer, a one-way seal, allows liquid waste to flow through but blocks sewer gases from coming back up and entering the restroom.
